7 Trends From the Last Decade (March 2020) That We’re Bringing Back

By Row Sullivan

With classes held online for the first month of the semester, we’ve been partying like it’s March 2020. Which is to say we’re avoiding each other like the plague (because, you know, the plague). While we wait for next week to resume in-person classes, here are some blasts from the past that have kept us busy during our time back at Zoom U.

  1. Long walks

Remember the outdoors? I, for one, try to romanticize my life by taking long walks either alone or with people in my COVID bubble. I recommend keeping an eye on the weather, though. Unfortunately, for those of us in DC, it hasn’t been treating us kindly (see below).

2. Existential dread

That looming sense of doom, like the pandemic, was in submission this fall. I would have even called it just plain, old, regular dread. Unfortunately, existential dread is now making a comeback along with a rise in COVID cases. I never said anything about these being good trends.

3. Tiger King (but mostly for the memes)

It’s been a minute since I’ve seen someone doing a Tik Tok dance to “Carol Baskin- Killed her husband, whacked him.” There’s allegedly a season two (coincidence? I think not), but we all know we’re not beating the original.

4. Grocery store shortages

I’d ask a KOGOD major about the supply chain crisis, but I don’t know, it seems fake. At least stores still have toilet paper.

5. Baking

Banana bread? Sourdough? Cookies? Foam coffee? There’s still time to recall some early pandemic baking skills before we all become dependent on the undercooked chicken at TDR for the rest of the semester.

6. Cowering at the government’s ineptitude

It’s a little better this time. A little. Sure, Florida is still Florida, the Supreme Court is striking down vaccine and testing mandates, and the President doesn’t seem to believe that there’s anything he can do, but on the bright side we did bully him into trying to make testing and masks slightly more available. To quote our favorite girlboss, VP Kamala Harris, “It is time for us to do what we have been doing, and that time is everyday.” Is it concerning that only the bad trends on this list are actually making a comeback?

7. Unite and come together as a country

Unfortunately, this one is just sarcasm and wishful thinking. Regardless, here’s to making the most of it in 2022.
